The Greater Emmanuel Baptist Church was organized in 1913 from a Sunday School class. Later a church was built. Unfortunately, that original building was destroyed by fire. So, services were then held across the street from that location in a building called "The Hall."
Years later, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Ellis donated the land at 1706 Avenue B to the Greater Emmanuel family to build a new building. The church has been under several pastors from that time.
When the Rev. I.Q. Fulellen left the church in August 1971, the Church was without a leader. After much prayer, the church chose to call the Rev. Burley Hudson as their new Pastor and on September 27, 1971, the Rev. Burley Hudson was named the Pastor of the Greater Emmanuel Baptist Church and he preached his first sermon as the new Pastor on the first Sunday of October.
Under the leadership of Pastor Hudson, the church prospered and grew to the point that a new building was needed. A piece of property was then purchased at 2110 East Eleventh Street, and construction on a new edifice was begun in 1977. In May 1978, the Greater Emmanuel Church Family moved into her new building where she has remained up until this present time. The Church is now planning on building a gymnasium and nursery to better serve her members and the community.
